2nd Annual GBS/CIDP Organization fundraiser event

On Saturday May 25, 2019 Calgary held their 2nd annual GBS/CIDP fundraiser event at South Glenmore Reservoir. This yea we had fine drizzle while we walked or rolled the mile or two. We had a couple of people from Edmonton as well as Red Deer this year. I was reminded how fortunate I am to have an awesome support system in Calgary from friends and coworkers. 

Last year, which was organized by my fellow coding coordinators and the GBS/CIDP Organization we raised $11,167 towards GBS/CIDP research. This year, the Laura’s Cheering Squad raised $2800.00 and this year’s total was $11,056. So close in matching last year’s total. It’s amazing in 2 short years we have raised over $22,000 for research. We are looking forward to next year’s event and add what we can do next year to bring more awareness to this disease. 

Just like last year, I had a wonderful day seeing friends and colleagues making me smile all day long. Thank you Amanda for being my attendee and wheelchair driver for this year’s event too.

 Received great news yesterday (Oct 13, 2021) - AADL (Alberta Aids to Daily Living) has officially approved my application in purchasing a powered wheelchair 🦼. They will be purchasing the wheelchair itself, the cost of the tilting mechanism (~$3500.00) plus granted me another $4000.00 towards the cost of the Vigo technology to run the wheelchair. Maximum Healthcare is the name of the vendor providing me with the wheelchair as well as other accessories to help with my daily living such as a lifting of the wheelchair seat so that I can speak to someone at eye level for a change. The total cost for me will be $8003.00 for upgrades and accessories. So just like buying a new car or a house even, that is what has gone into purchasing my powered wheelchair. Meeting Dr. Chris White - Neuromuscular Physician

On September 22, 2018, my friend Marilyn and I had the opportunity of attending an education session at Mount Royal University hosted by the GBS/CIDP Organization. The topic was GBS and IVIG treatment (intravenous immunoglobulin). The last speaker was Dr. Chris White, a neuromuscular physician from Calgary’s South Health Campus Hospital. In his presentation he described how IVIG treatment works depending on the type of GBS variant you have. In the presentations earlier left me a bit disheartening as I keep hearing people’s questions asking, “ I have been taking IVIG treatments for the past 2 years.. ”. I thinking, “ Are you kidding me? I only got in the beginning, September 2016 and now it’s 2 years later. Has my recovery been slow because I haven’t received additional IVIG treatments while in hospital?” But Dr. Chris White’s presentation helped me turn my feelings around. It’s been 3 years

Today (September 10) marks 3 years since my life undeniably changed forever. This day I was in ICU on life support fighting to stay alive. Not knowing they journey I would have to face if I survived. Fortunate or not, the next 6 weeks I do not remember the battles I had to face - having a cardiac arrest because of severe bradycardia (slow heart rate), pneumonia, blood clots and of course paralysis from head to toe. It is through sharing with my mom and friends who were there filling me in what all occurred. Heart goes out to my mom who had bear witness to all of it but grateful for my friends who were there for me and supported my mom too. A moment in time, that Friday night after a long day in the office, I went out to buy my supper at Extreme Pita for a chicken bacon ranch pita. Who knew undercooked chicken would be the catalyst, giving me food poisoning and the stomach flu; then numbness and inability to walk a week later. How does that happen so fast?
