Outing adventure

The weather was finally becoming like spring. More sunshine and warmer temperatures, so it was wonderful to get out of my hospital room for a little bit of fresh air. My mom and I found a small area with benches and shaded by trees just around the corner from the main entrance to the hospital. When it was nice outside we would venture out for a change of scenery. Across from the hospital is Sunridge mall where Cora’s restaurant is. During my time in ICU, Cora’s became a “home away from home” for my mom. To get a break from the hospital, she would go to Cora’s for lunch. Due to mom’s frequency going there, the waitresses got to know and my health crisis. Many times my mom would return saying the girls there are praying for you. Of course, when family friends or my cousin Pat from Edmonton - my mom would go to Cora’s. One week she went to Cora’s 4 times with different visitors! 

May 2018 - it was my turn to go to Cora’s. My mom, our friend Marilyn drove me over to Cora’s for lunch. We knew my chair was too wide to go through the doors off the street, so went to try going through the mall entrance. Unfortunately we faced the same issue - my oversized wheelchair couldn’t get through the entrance. We were fortunate it was a beautiful sunny day and I had no issue getting through the patio gate. It was my first meal in a restaurant since being sick almost 2 years ago. We enjoyed a wonderful lunch. I didn’t feel self-conscious being fed in public. Just enjoyed the moment being with 2 special people to me celebrating another milestone in my recovery.

GBS: Learning to Accept and Adapt

  When one experience repeat traumas or major changes in their life, I feel we gain tools to help us through the next trauma or change. If you have many, you can find the strength to handle them as well as find better coping mechanisms, to see us through to the other side. Happy 50th Birthday to me

On September 17, 2020 - I turn the big 5-0!! Imagine I will be a half century old - 5 decades. How it has been a learning journey as I look back. Thought I would be reflective as I move into a new decade. Seeing how I evolved into the person I am to, you can see your strengths and weaknesses to your personality. Also you can see how events you have in life can change the direction you would have been going down. Of course, these same events can “forever change your life”, and one needs to learn how to pick up those pieces to continue on with your life. Some people don’t like to look back and only forward. If you lost someone, you don’t feel comfortable talking about this person, maybe as it hurts too much to remember the pain of losing that someone.  Received great news yesterday (Oct 13, 2021) - AADL (Alberta Aids to Daily Living) has officially approved my application in purchasing a powered wheelchair 🦼. They will be purchasing the wheelchair itself, the cost of the tilting mechanism (~$3500.00) plus granted me another $4000.00 towards the cost of the Vigo technology to run the wheelchair. Maximum Healthcare is the name of the vendor providing me with the wheelchair as well as other accessories to help with my daily living such as a lifting of the wheelchair seat so that I can speak to someone at eye level for a change. The total cost for me will be $8003.00 for upgrades and accessories. So just like buying a new car or a house even, that is what has gone into purchasing my powered wheelchair. There is the basic powered chair (~$20,000) + all the upgrades (~$12,000) Excited to see what doors will open, literally.
