Covid-19 Long Term Disability Financial Benefit

It seemed that every sector and individual received some sort of Covid-19 financial benefits except those Canadians on long term disability. Seeing there was a place to leave a comment for our Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, so that is what I did. I wrote inquiring why there hasn’t been a Covid-19 financial benefit for those Canadians on long term disability like myself. It could be pure coincidence, but on June 5, 2020 it was announced that those Canadians on LTD will receive a one-lump sun Covid-19 benefit. It is a nice to think I was a part of one voice for those on long term disability. Below is also the link of the federal government announcement of the Covid-19 LTD benefit.

Dear Ms. Rutherford:

On behalf of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, I would like to acknowledge receipt of your correspondence regarding Canada Pension Plan (CPP) disability Benefits.

Please be assured that your comments have been carefully reviewed. In your correspondence, you raise an issue that falls within the portfolio of the Honourable Carla Qualtrough, Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Disability Inclusion. I have therefore taken the liberty of forwarding your email to Minister Qualtrough for her information and consideration.

Hello Prime Minister Trudeau. Though the CBCNews app,

I found a link of what financial support you are giving Canadians as we face this Covid-19 crisis. Unfortunately, when going through the different sectors/group of people who you and your government are helping, I do not fit in any of those categories. In September 2016 I was diagnosed with Guillian Barre Syndrome (GBS) which has left me a quadriplegic and can no longer work.

I have been on long term disability since January 2017 and now live in a nursing home (LTC facility) in Calgary Alberta. Will there be any financial assistance to those Canadians who are on long term disability or who can't work due to a disability from injuries, especially when your income exceeds the maximum to receive a GST Tax Credit? In addition, I recently read that prisoners are qualifying for CERB (up to $2000/mth) and international students (non-Canadians) receives $8000 but Canadians seniors, our most vulnerable people in this pandemic are only given a one-lump sum of $500. Can

you explain the rationale you and your government came to your decisions when looking at how best to support Canadians during this pandemic? What additional expenses do prisoners have other than what federal government provides - their housing, health and food are taken care for them? When you are to support Canadians, what is the rationale giving international students $8000, all the while you are only giving seniors a mere one lump sum of $500. It doesn't make sense to me.

In saying all of this PM Trudeau, I would at this time commend you how you are showing leadership in the global community in the fight with Covid. How you are showing with working with the premiers from the beginning that working alongside each other is better for Canadians rather than each province/territories doing their own thing not being concerned with provinces/territories near them. Thank you for your time on this matter.

Sincerely,

Laura Jean Rutherford
